Being creative is a necessity in my life. My education in the arts has allowed me to explore many styles of art and has given me the opportunity to discover my own styles.
I love painting with acrylics and experimenting with different media. Much of my work is inspired by the gold leaf and spiralling biomorphic forms of Gustav Klimt, the early work of Jackson Pollock (such a Moon Woman) and the symbolism of Piet Mondrian’s Trees.
I repeatedly use symbols in my work that hold special meaning for me. The tree and ovum are two such symbols. Mondrian believed the horizontal to symbolize materialism and the vertical spirituality, and he saw the tree as representing a balance between both planes. For me the ovum symbolizes life, the miracle of birth, and the strength, power and wisdom of woman. The apple (fruit) and the dove are two other symbols that inspire me. I see the apple as symbolizing life, health and wellbeing, and the dove as symbolizing a balance between body and soul for birds occupy both the heavens and the earth.
Although I use symbols in some of my work I do not believe that art needs to communicate a specific message or moral in order to be considered high art and not kitsch. If an artwork speaks to you, even if you are not sure what it is saying, but its beauty captures your attention and gaze, then it is art. It need be nothing more than what it is. My goal is to create paintings that emanate positivity and remind people of what is truly important in life (e.g. health, love, happiness, peace, balance etc.).
